Common Questions

What is a Leader at PLC?

At Peterson Learning Center LLC., what most places call a student, we proudly call a Leader.

Why? Because words matter. Research has shown that individuals internalize the words used to describe them, whether positive or negative. These words shape their identity, self-confidence, and future potential. By referring to our students as Leaders, we instill in them a mindset of growth, responsibility, and capability.
We believe that every child has the potential to lead—in their education, in their community, and in their personal lives. Through encouragement, hands-on learning, and real-world skill-building, we help develop leaders who are critical thinkers, problem solvers, and confident decision-makers.
Who Guides Our Leaders?
Instead of calling them teachers, we use the term Coaches because our role is not just to instruct but to mentor, support, and guide each Leader through their personal and academic journey. Coaches provide:
✔ Encouragement – Helping Leaders believe in their abilities and push past obstacles.
✔ Support – Assisting with their chosen curriculum and reinforcing concepts through hands-on learning.
✔ Real-World Skills – Teaching life skills that prepare Leaders for success beyond the classroom.
By addressing our students as Leaders and our educators as Coaches, we are creating an environment of empowerment, respect, and self-belief—helping each child step into their full potential.

what is a microschool/learning pod?

These are all terms to explain what is a non-traditional educational setting where students are learning side-by-side with learners of various ages and abilities. Think of it like a one room schoolhouse. In a mixed-age, project-based, child-led learning environment, learners thrive through collaboration, mentorship, and personalized exploration. Older students mentor younger ones, fostering empathy and leadership skills, while project-based learning encourages creativity and critical thinking, empowering learners to take ownership of their education. Microschools have become increasingly popular as homeschooling has become more prominent. The students enrolled at Peterson Learning Center are considered private School students or are students who are enrolled independent homeschool program, which allows parents to have more involvement in their child's education.

What is meant by hybrid style?

Hybrid learning is an educational approach that merges elements of traditional classroom instruction, homeschooling, and online coursework. At Peterson Learning Center, students can attend on-site classes for direct instruction, while also completing assignments at home or during community outings. This integrated model acknowledges that students are always learning—from every location within their support system, whether at Peterson Learning Center, home, or extracurricular venues. By involving parents, guardians, and mentors as active partners in the learning process, hybrid learning fosters a well-rounded development of each student—academically, personally, and socially—ultimately shaping them into total leaders equipped to serve and succeed in their communities.

Is this a private school?

Peterson Learning Center LLC., is what is known as a micro-school or tutoring center or learning pod hybrid. We are listed as a Tennessee Board of Education Category III private school, but you can also choose the microschool side which lists your child as an independent homeschool learner. We are dedicated to helping all academic leaders succeed in their chosen curriculum while also fostering lifelong skills and personal growth.
Our approach is unique and flexible—we support students from various educational backgrounds, including homeschoolers, virtual learners, and traditional school students. Our role is to enhance and supplement their education by providing:
✔ Academic Support – We assist students in mastering their core subjects through tutoring, project-based learning, and hands-on activities that reinforce concepts in ELA, Math, Science, and History/Government.
✔ Lifelong Skills & Exploration – We offer Fill-Me classes that go beyond traditional academics, exposing students to music, art, robotics, budgeting, animal care, international discovery, cooking, and more—building the foundation for lifelong learning and real-world success.
✔ The Whole-Child Approach – We focus on more than just academics. Our program supports social, emotional, and practical life skills through group collaboration, problem-solving, and community-building experiences.
At Peterson Learning Center, we adapt to each child’s needs and provide an engaging, supportive environment where every student can thrive in learning, discovery, and personal growth.

Does my child get a diploma?

Yes, they will receive a diploma from Peterson Learning Center OR school in which they are enrolled, and all transcripts needed for higher education. Our private school leaders are graduating from an accredited private school and our homeschool learners receive a home school diploma from an accredited program as well.  Homeschool diplomas are accepted at colleges and technical schools with proper transcripts and ACT or other required prerequisites that Peterson Learning Center will work on completing with your leader.

Do I have to be a certain religion?

At Peterson Learning Center LLC., we believe in educating the total child—academically, socially, and ethically. While we do have a Christian foundation and offer an optional weekly Bible class for those who want a deeper dive into faith-based learning, we also provide secular study options during the same time slots. We do not require any statement of religious beliefs to attend; it is entirely up to each family to decide what path fits their values and goals.
We embrace strong morals and ethics, which are outlined in our handbook, and welcome students who wish to excel academically while developing into strong leaders. Our goal is to support each child’s unique journey toward adulthood, helping them cultivate principles that guide them both inside and outside the classroom. Ultimately, every family can choose the path that aligns with their personal beliefs and aspirations—our doors are open to anyone seeking a nurturing, high-quality educational environment.
